How to Cancel Amazon Prime (And Potentially Get a Refund)

Step-by-step guide to cancelling Amazon Prime on web, iPhone, and Android. Find out if you qualify for a full or partial refund before you cancel.

Amazon Prime costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year in the US. What most people don't know: Amazon may give you a full or partial refund when you cancel, depending on how recently you used your Prime benefits. This guide walks you through how to cancel and how to check whether you're owed money back.

1

How to Cancel Amazon Prime on the Website

Go to amazon.com and sign in. Hover over "Account & Lists" in the top navigation and click "Prime Membership". On the Prime page, click "Manage membership" or look for "Update, cancel and more". Click "End membership". Amazon will take you through a short confirmation flow and may offer you an alternative — such as pausing your membership — before finalising. On the last screen, Amazon shows whether you qualify for a refund. Click "Cancel membership" to confirm. You'll receive an email confirmation and your Prime access continues until the end of your billing period.

2

How to Cancel Amazon Prime on Mobile

Open the Amazon Shopping app on your iPhone or Android device. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the bottom navigation, then tap "Your Account". Scroll down and tap "Manage Prime Membership". From there, tap "End membership" and follow the same steps as the web cancellation. The refund eligibility check and confirmation are the same on both platforms. If you prefer, you can also go to amazon.com in a mobile browser and follow the web steps above.

3

When Amazon Will Refund Your Prime Payment

Amazon's refund policy depends on whether you've used Prime benefits since your last payment. You're eligible for a full refund if you cancel within 3 business days of your sign-up or renewal date AND you haven't used any Prime benefits (no free shipping, no Prime Video streaming, no Prime Music, no Prime Reading). A partial refund is sometimes offered if you've been a member a short time and haven't used shipping benefits. No refund is given if you've actively used Prime benefits. Amazon determines this automatically and shows your eligibility during the cancellation flow.

4

Pausing Prime Instead of Cancelling

If you're going on a trip, taking a spending break, or just rarely shopping for a few months, pausing Prime may be better than cancelling. Amazon allows you to pause for 1 or 3 months. During the pause, you're not billed and lose access to all Prime benefits, but your membership resumes automatically afterward. You'll find the pause option in the same "Manage membership" section. Students with a Prime Student membership can pause for up to 6 months. Pausing is not available if you have an active annual plan — only monthly plans can be paused.
